That seems like alot effort to go through.

Not really.  Not if you're already a 3D artist and have the tools on hand to create a 3D print.  Also, knowing how starved the gaming populace is for NX info, coming up with a convincing fake would be a good way to get your name out there or just screw with people.  Hell, I'd probably make a fake if I had the tools and the know-how.
