The intire point of the "touch screen" gamepad is that you can load any button setup you wish, for whatever game/app you want.

The buttons are there, they are just touch screen based, like when your playing on your phone.

And playing games on a phone is horrible because of it, ever tried nes or snes emulators on a phone? if it's not a turn based JRPG the games are unplayable.

 

Lack of buttons is objectively the worst thing that could happen to a controller.

Its nintendos vision of what controllers should look like... not mine.

However we shouldnt be so quick to judge, maybe it works better on their controller, than on smart phones.
