I think they can easily take on Sony, as long as they don't have this controller. Sony lost the only generation where it had real compitition. If the NX has a controller with traditional buttons, a second screen, and a sleek and urganomic design, everything else we know about it will, I'm sure, absolutely steal PS4's thunder. Especially if Nintendo embraces cross-play with the XBO. I don't think PS4 will stop selling well, but I think the PS4 will be the 360 to the NX's Wii in terms of sales. But it'll be worse because, inlike with the Wii vs. 360, the NX will actually be competing directly for PS4's consumers. The PS4 and XBO are at 60m combined now. If the generation is the same as before, that leave 100m consumers who have yet to jump onto next gen, and NX is going to take the majority of them from the moment it launches. As long as it doesn't launch with this stupid controller. |
Well, that's some revisionist history right there. No, the fact is Nintendo lost every gen it went up against Sony in, save one. And last gen it was mainly Sony's fault that it stumbled out the gate, not the competitions. Nintendo was also able to tap into the casual market, a market that is mostly gone now. Still, the PS3 ended up only ~15M less than the Wii. When Sony has won gens, the competition finishes nowhere close.
And nothing is going to steal the PS4's thunder, save the end of Japan, or the world. Especially not a machine that is rumored to be only as powerful as the XBO, which has been outsold 2:1 by the PS4, so far. It's time to face it, Nintendo just can't compete with the big boys in the home console space. They got lucky that the casuals came in in droves last gen, but that's not happening, again. Which really makes it strange that they still seem to keep aiming at them in terms of power and features.
And the real death knell of the NX? The PS5, which will most likely launch in 2018 or 2019. How is a console on par with the XBO going to compete with a ~$399 console that is 4x-5x as powerful as the PS4? That will most likely be B/C with the PS4? It hasn't a prayer, regardless of what controller it uses. I'm sure the Nintendo fans will eat it up, but given the Wii U's sales, there aren't that many left.
