Back in the days, nearly every game had such a mode. We just called it cheats back then. I remember I never played Parodius without cheats, because I was like 5 years old and sucked ass at games. A large portion of Nintendos target group are kids, so it's just logical to deliver them what they want. And after all, it's optional. It's really not that important if it's just an option or if you enter the Konami cheatcode. It's the same thing. We all did it at some point.
