It's happened more often than that surprisingly, for games such as Super Mario World, Mario 64, Smash Bros Melee, the Wii, and even fairly recent with Undertale. Those are just the ones that are most prominent with me. I guess you could say I didn't really follow media for a long time on the internet.
I've found my experiences with these games the most surprising and memorable because I knew almost nothing about them before playing them. So I would think otherwise that a lot of exporsure to something would not take that excitement away. That's just me though. I can't speak for everyone.
