It may be self generated, but its not totally random generation, the game will have a core code that defines certain things. Discovery can be the aliens, the story, the content. Just because they are generating it, its still within their control what it is doing.

It can be both good and bad but it doesn't necessarily mean it's totally never done before and unique.

Nothing is totally never done before and unique.... any game has gameplay that has definately been done before....
