There are many different factors involved (entry price, form factor, HDTV penetration, etc), I guess most parents prefer their kids to play cute cartoon-like games, especially for pre-teens and teen girls. If so, it's IMO good they seem to agree themselves as well. 
Earlier surveys showed adult males in general prefer the PS3, but adult females prefer the Wii.
IMO both are great family consoles, the PS3 especially for its multi-media features in addition to the most impressive console games available. But the PS3 lacks kid-friendly games, the biggest such game is IMO Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction. Games like Jak & Daxter and LittleBigPlanet will be good additions and a cheaper slimline PS3 I imagine will have a positive effect as well in the future.
