It's like other "hard core" Wii U game that the Nintendo fans rave about pre-release from IPs that have a history of only modest sales. All of a sudden these franchises were going to do great things for Wii U and sell much higher than past sales woud suggest.

Bayonetta 2, fatal frame, and this. All got hyped as going to be big on Wii U and push hardware.

Well, I never thought Bayonetta 2 or Fatal Frame had a chance.  Bayo wasn't a huge hit before and it was now coming to only one platform with a small install base.  And Fatal Frame has been a consistent retail disappointments since the first one :P.

But with XCX and the XC franchise, I believed and still firmly believe it COULD be big.  It has numerous elements that would appeal to the new direction the core market is going.  But Nintendo has GOT to promote *in the clutch*.  They can't just do trailers and build up vids on their channel and then promote (admittedly well) on ONE channel for like one month.  Xenoblade has potential to be big, but only if Nintendo invests in making it big.  The fact is that Splatoon is the only game outside of the usual group Nintendo promotes that got any meaningful promotion.  XCX should have had ads on multiple channels and in theaters during the Star Wars showings (seriously, how the hell do you miss THAT opportunity as a SCIFI RPG?!).

People expecting these games to just walk out with minimal support and do what Zelda or Mario do are deluded, yes.  But that doesn't mean the potential isn't there.  After all, the only reason Zelda and Mario can go out and sell millions with minimal support is because they have a reputation that is ingrained in people's brains.  It's unreasonable to expect young new IP to do the same.
