I don't know exactly what MS have in their mind, but Consoles will be more alive than ever, no way PCs will replace them, for definition. Consoles offer everything to hardcore gamers, casual-hardcore and casual gamers, easy to play, small and cool devices, and multiplatform games which basicly compare well with the PC version running on PCs which has 4 times the raw power and cost so much more. There could be a change in MS strategy, a different XBox, different life cycle, but I don't see XBox dying as a gaming console!

Between the 6th gen and this one, console gaming has been a brutally competitive market. Due to the dominance of the PS2 back in the day, the effords of the PS360 twins to outsell eachother and ending with losses, or once again having to fight the market dominane of the PS4, I think Microsoft is just wondering how much is that market woth for them, specially when there's a whole world of possibilities out there (mobile, tablets, the revival of PC gaming...). If anything, we are going to see the console market becoming less and less competitive: Nintendo is trying their hybrid project with the NX, Microsoft is trying to mix the Xbox with W10, and no other company seems to care about entering the market.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
