I believe the "kid market" thing is purely sociological in nature. I'm 36, I play Mario and Zelda, Donkey Kong Country, Pikmin, Smash Bros... hell, I've recently, for the first time, started playing a Pokemon game... and yet, regardless of what people say online, I have had more fun with those games than current "grown up" titles.
The "kid" thing was created by Sega. Sega started that whole angle because they wanted to beat Nintendo, and it worked. But the damage was long lasting. People, including myself for years, were brainwashed into thinking that non-violent games with color and charm were for kids. That a game had to have killing, mature themes, blood, violence or sexual overtones in order to be "grown up". But, again, that was just marketing and we were all tools. Was Sega great? Sure. Were their games legendary in their own right? Sure... but that whole marketing thing, it took it's toll.
Nintendo is like Disney. Snow White was not intended to be a kids movie. Kids were NOT the ones that made that movie great and they weren't what put Disney on the map. But as time went on, other companies managed to use cartoons as a tool to sell kids stories and thus, society started to deme the entire art form of cartoons a "kids thing". Nintendo suffers from the same fate.
I'm just glad I was born with a critical mind. Otherwise, I'd be playing COD 1,000, drinking Monster energy drinks, wearing oversized headphones and Twitching my no scoping skillz 24/7.
