That's true.

But what's more important, to keep backwards compatibility to let new users play "old" Wii U games on their NX console, even if that means keep using hardware that rest of the industry doesn't support and therefore making ports a bit more difficult, or moving away from PowerPC to make their console easier to develop for even if that means that whoever wants to play Wii U games will have to buy an used Wii U or buy one of the possible re-releases on NX.

That's one of the decisions that Nintendo will have to make has been forced to take, and that will play an important role into what kind of console we may see.

Their priority now is expanding their userbase. I'd love BC from the start, but I'm sure Nintendo is already making a couple of Wii/WiiU remasters for the NX first year. An emulation similar to XBone-360 would be ideal, specially to reward WiiU users, they get the upgraded version of the games they already own.

Also, we don't even know if the NX home console will use CDs, considering they can either go fully digital or go back to cartridges to make the system compatible with the handheld NX. So regular BC isn't even clear. We could see a scenario where the NX is naturally BC with the DS/3DS instead of the WiiU, just because their games are on cartridges.

But having an optical drive or not doesn't necessarily mean the lack or not of BC. For example, if the console lacks an optical drive but keeps using a PowerPC processor, Nintendo could use the new account system to track which Wii U games we have and allow us to get a digital copy of that game on NX, for free of for a small amount.

But yeah, I agree that the priority has to be to expand the current userbase, and given that there are so many unknows (if we're talking about a handheld then all this talk is pointless), anything is still possible.
