You're asking the wrong question. I don't think Microsoft cares about the consoles because console sales aren't traditionally profitable. They care about their userbase, because it's games and peripherals that make the profit. The real question is whether this is going to improve the userbase, and that's a pretty difficult question all things considered. Yes, the userbase is going to be much, much larger. However, it's more difficult to predict how large portion of the userbase is going to have hardware suitable for gaming.

Anyway, Microsoft is probably moving in the right direction. Gaming and computing are changing, and this seems to be the future. The question is whether the timing is right or not.
