As I've said many time before, Xbox is a vehicle for pushing MS products on an audience that wants consoles.

Moving away from Xbox is literally throwing a massive following away (how many other TV devices sell as well as Xbox?). The Xbox audience isnt just 8th gen users. Millions of people still subscribe to Xbox live to play 360 games online. Black Ops 3 for example has sold over a million units and its online only.

To the normal customer, Xbox PCs could still look like a console. They just have to pack them in a fancy box and tack on some special UI, like Steam Big Picture. 90 % of the customers won't notice the difference. Microsoft would have the advantage that they only need to concentrate on one single system, plus the complete functionality of a full-blown windows would actually be a selling point for a "console".

So, I can definitely see something like that happening.

Hypothetically, if the next Xbox is basically just a Windows PC with a home console style interface, I think the market would be fine with that. Just depends on how its executed.

Quite frankly... that's kinda what the X1 is. Its apparently running Windows 10 and basically the same architecture as a PC. Its just not a PC in the traditional sense.
