It's safe to say that Nintendo won't launch new hardware this year.

Sadly I have to doubt it. Considering it would have to release in less than 8 months from now and there's probably only two months left for non-NX announcements, we should know about it already if it existed. 

Even that rumour saying we have on more unannounced Wii U game, probable Paper Mario. If you look, Fire Emblem Megami Tensei is probably summer game and between that and Zelda U in most likely November Wii U dont have nothing, that unannounced game would perfectly fit like release in September-October and people could said that Wii U had some support even in last year before NX.
