Ugh, I hate when people parrot the whole, "Well, they should only put in a minority character if it's essential to the plot," when what's essential depends on the central plot. In a story about ethnicity or sexuality (e.g., American History X, Philadelphia, etc.), then of course the protagonist's ethnic background or sexuality will come in to play, but in a science fiction fantasy, ethnicity or sexuality may have little to no influence.
For example, the ethnicity of Finn in Force Awakens plays no significance on the plot, so they could've casted anyone for the role (I think the casting was great). Similarly, there was no overt, romantic sub-plot in the film, so it wasn't necessary to define the sexuality of each of the new characters yet. Ethnicity or sexuality may come in to play in the following films, but the first film, neither were central to the plot.
Ultimately, I'm all for inclusiveness, so I have no problem with what Abrams had said.
