It was fun the first time, but it was starting to get old when we played it the third time.

I was wondering the same thing.

 

Select Samus, hold R (Shield button) down while you're on the character screen and press start to go to the stage screen. As long as you were holding the button, you should be ZSS. Offline, you'll see ZSS in the character portraits in the upper left of the stage screen.
