The only reason Pokemon has survived this long is because of its narrative, lore, and world building. The way they're ending this generation, as bad as it's been, is a huge blow to be honest.

I'm not sure about that. I think what keeps people glued to the franchise is the fights, the possibility of social interaction with trading and its charming world, with different areas each gen and very well crafted. The lore... Maybe, I'm not sure, that's definitely not what's keeping me buying Pokémon since 20 years, but I can't speak for the vast majority.

I'm in the same boat as you. I never really got into the lore until gen 3 and even then I didn't fully understand what's going on, and I grew up with gen 1. I was just mesmerized with the new Pokemn and new worlds to travel in.

Its kinda like Star Wars, when you grew up with the old films or new films, you were mostly mesmerized by the fight scenes and the out of this world atmosphere. As you grow older, you're more interested in the story and characters and how they develop.
