Nintendo is in a bit of a tough position in so far as they are desperate to keep the NX details a secret from the gaming world until E3 2016 but at the same time get as many people as possible to develop games for it. That is why only big software houses like EA, Ubisoft etc are privy to the dev kits at this stage. If the details were to leak it would allow the competition to counter the NX before it was even released and spell doom for Nintendo.
For this reason I personally think a 2017 release for NX is likely with E3 2016 being the unveiling of the console with momentum building to a 2017 release.

There is no competition from anyone at this point.

Both Microsoft and Sony, already have their consoles released, its nintendo thats late to the party.

By 2020 when Sony release a new console, chances are Nintendo will again need another new console, to compete with it (esp if they go weak hardware on NX).
