Of course I can deny it came in 2nd, it came in 3rd, that's it, I won't be able to deny it came in 2nd if it gets above the PS3 when they still last, otherwise, right now, it's 3rd, and it lost most of the years it competed with the PS3 and the Wii. 360 came in 3rd in the 7th gen, during it and also up until now.
The generation ends when the consoles stop, the Wii was dropped in 2012 and the generation was not called a deal there, it continued, just like it's still countinuing right now and will until both the PS3 and 360 dies.

A generation ends when the all the new gen comes out. If we use the logic you gave the 6th ended in 2012.
