You asked what made me assume that Square Enix was talking about the PS4 version of DQXI in regards to the NX? Well, what other version is it going to be ported from?  The 3DS version?  I don't think that little of what the NX will actually be.

I don't understand how an Xbox one port makes it a stronger case that there won't be an NX port.  That just means to me that Square Enix is more than willing to port to other platforms if there's an audience, it can run the game and there's relative ease in the porting process.  Even if they're starting to drop xbox one support, that actually gives me a stronger argument that they'll likely port to the NX as long as it can handle it and porting to it isn't a headache since they'll need another platform to make up for the lost income from the xbox one -- plus, Nintendo platforms still have strong JRPG audiences and Japanese support -- and if Nintendo can find a way to make console games run at a smaller resolution on handhelds (which is what's kind of being hinted at with the unified library rumors) then Square Enix and every Japanese 3rd party are going to support the hell out of it.

In the end, it doesn't really matter if any of us are right or wrong but it's fun to speculate on stuff like this.

We have no idea on the NX specs when it comes to the handheld version. For all we know it will just be a slighty better Vita and the cost to downgrade the game will be greater than the cost to just moce across and spruce up the 3DS version.

My comment was in the lack of porting from SE t the X1 as a whole, especially in light of its positive Western sales. There is no lost income from not releasing an X1 version: porting is not dirt cheap, and there still licensing and marketting fees etc to take into account.

Also I would disagree with Nintendo having strong Japanese support. WiiU support from JPN is pretty poor, and even the 3DS has far less support from Japan than the 3DS or PSP ever had. If anything, the Vita has far more support (though mostly in newer and less selling IPs). Honestly, if it wasn't for MH, YW and DQ, 3DS JPN support would be pretty much lackluster at this point.

I think most devs are not going to support the device if it doesn't sell: which is pretty much key to any support. After all, the 3DS was a pretty competetively selling device and failed to attract large JPN support. Sure, SE will probably jump on the bandwagon early to see what they can achieve, but it is just as likely that they play a more cautious game and see how NX does in the first few months.

The important thing is that Nintendo can convince them that support is worth it for SE.

(and yes, speculation is fun!)

There's no handheld version but the 3ds successor will be leaps and bounds above psvita in terms of hardware. It's kinda impossible for the opposite to happen.
