That said there are a number of factors for each. The only disadvantage for minecraft is like you said it's multiplat. But that's it. Comparing both splatoon has...

 

*Price (Not saying splatoon is expensive, just minecraft is cheap and one of its main factors for legs) 

*WiiU (It's a user base of only 3mil, vita has 5mil and counting) 

*lack of new owners (ties in with above but it's like the only game I seen that outsells the hardware it's on for months) 

 

Iike I said both are impressive in their own  rights. I just think splatoon for the reasons above, specifically the 2nd and 3rd make splatoon most impressive.

One more  A few more for vita, though, is that minecraft has more competition. There are far more vita games coming out (or already available) in Japan than wiiu games. Plus first party games tend to sell well on ninty consoles. It's just that Splatoon is not only exceeding expectations, it's beating games like Mario Kart, which is phenomenal. Lastly, keep in mind that, by and large, Japanese games tend to do better than western games in Japan.
