When Awakening came out, everybody was mad that Nintendo had abandoned the old-school Fire Emblem gameplay. Now Nintendo gifts us with a Fire Emblem release that allows us to experience Fire Emblem the old way that fans have been asking for (Conquest) while still being able to earn money with the much more mainstream friendly Birthright. It's very likely that Conquest is going to be a loss for Nintendo (like most of the old-school Fire Emblem games were) and it's clearly being done for us fans so I think that it is completely reasonable that there is some repeated content and a $20.00 upgrade cost.
If you don't like the pricing for Fire Emblem Fates then you should buy one of the games, forget the other two exist and just be happy with your typical 40 hour Fire Emblem experience.
