There were numerous consoles that used CDs before PS1. They just weren't very good machines. Sega CD had a few good games though.

Millions of people use their consoles as multi media boxes and gaming machines. If a game console didn't offer the multi media features, they would lose sales. Hey, PS4 is a popular machine for looking at porn as well. Like I said, game consoles became media boxes because that's what the market wants and MS knew that when entering the console market arena.

People forget Sony pushed TV features a lot of as well early on. They are even pushing Playstation Vue.

Those things does not matter for Console Sales, and about the Porn thing, we Only know that Playstation 4, used it more than Xbox One, if PS4, had 1.3234 Seconds per user, and Xbox One 0,923103 Seconds per user, would still be higher.

Sega, made consoles that were Hard to develop to, Sony, made a Console that had a CD Reader, and was easy to developer, plus Sony, paid the development of a lot of games for their consoles, Final Fantasy 7, was the first Megaton on Gaming, the game with the most budget of all times until the release, the game Cost over 150 Millions US$, that was paid by Square, and Sony, just to measure, The Witcher 3, is a 60Millions Budget game, same for Metal Gear Solid V, so the game had a Huge budget even for Modern days.

People play console for games, and the console with the better Exclusives wins, the Wii, had Motion Control Exclusives, that were much popular, and was what sold a lot of Wii, so Exclusives is what sell consoles.

The porn things was just an example of what people can and do use the console for. Playstation is also the most popular platform for streaming Nexflix and people credit PS3 for the success of Bluray movies. Like I said before, Playstation and Xbox became media boxes because that's what the market wants.

PS1 was successful is because Sony did a great job getting developers to put games on their machine. They would also money hat titles on occasion. Sega and Nintendo on the otherhand had a tendency to push developers away with their tech and policies. I think Sony shook up an industry that was arguably being held down Sega and Nintendo. I feel MS did the same when Sony became too relaxed with and released PS3, that machine was a mess.

Hype sold the Wii and notable exclusives helped. Wii U failed in spite of strong exclusives.
