Again, Vita was part of the brand and it got left in the dust. Any way you slice it was a failure for Playstation. Its a cool gaming device released at the wrong time, Sony couldn't find a market for it.

I'd argue that PS3 was also a"failure", in some regards. What came of it? A record selling sequel. 

PS3 was a failure in the sense it gave much of the market to Xbox and lost billions of dollars. Sony couldn't afford another PS3 situation.

However, the billions of dollars lost helped them maintain a strong market share. PS3's large audience on top of X1's mistakes helped PS4 be a success.

The 7th gen was also so long and people were ready to buy a new consoles. Especially since PS4 launched at a reasonable price. Sony wouldn't have the same record sales at 599 US Dollars.
