Basically for Xb 360, worldwide, it was looking like having a 45-50 million generation with a new gen console required in about 2011. And then Kinect came along and massively increased yearly sales and extended the generation by 2 years. 2008 was 360's peak year and had it been a normal console cycle, 3 more years of diminishing sales would have got the 360 through to maybe 7 or 8 million (globally) in sales in 2011, a LTD of about 50 million a new gen of console in 2011 and a rapid die off in 360 sales.
This is the sort of generation Xb one is looking to have unless something crazy like Kinect happens in 2017/18.
It's interesting to compare 360 vs Xb one in USA vs the rest of the world. In 2014 RoW was responsible for more of the gen on gen difference than the USA (~600k vs ~500K), in 2015 RoW contributed virtually nothing to the gen on gen difference (~30K), while the USA's gen on gen difference was bigger than in 2014 (still about 500K, but slightly more).
