Exploration is great, but it's not neccesary.  I wouldn't push it in Uncharted just because.  If Naughty Dog pushes more for exploration, that's great.  If they don't, it's still great.  As long as the game is enjoyable, that's all that really matters to me.

I don't know if Nathan is neccesarily an explorer.  Even if you argue he is, that doesn't neccesarily mean that's what people play the game for.

Nathan is an explorer by virtue of the fact that he's a historian/thief and was raised by a thief. He's been involved in high profie heists that prepare him for the next casing/ theft. He's motivated to discover historical elements because of his lineage which to some degree seems to be a mystery. If anyone wants to know the history of an item and wants to know how to steal it because ancient traps and things they go to Nathan.

The new lara croft is not a thief, but she was a rich girl taught by her father how to be a survivalist at a young age and somehow this taps into her being an explorer. Badly written, but great acting in the second game.
