Without Disney, there IS no Ghibli. They practically created the full feature length animated format. The stuff they did was revolutionary and those classic movies (Snow White, Cinderella etc.) are still being purchased and enjoyed 80 years later. I think if you asked Ghibli who the better studio was, they've dying laughing. Having said that, I like their movies too. But they're a hard sell in the west. Very Japanese. That doesn't bode well with everyone. |
Disney never managed to make a good animated feature over 2 hours though. Fantasia is the only one at 125 min and that's a collection. Disney also never managed to make animated features an accepted medium in the West for mature storytelling. Disney movies are very formulaic, though very charming, I also like a bit of randomness, surprise or real life situations. Disney is at its best with its song and dance routine.
Disney invented a lot of animation techniques, that doesn't say Ghibli hasn't improved on them. The lighting techniques of studio Ghibli are second to none.
