I'd normally agree with this, but I don't think Nintendo is in the position to release a new system with a port/cross gen game as it's main thing. It would be better to release it along with 3D Mario and after 3 or 4 months have some other big game... maybe Retro's project, I don't know.

I know this is no small feat, but still... they really have to try hard this time.

The Wii launched with a Zelda cross gen game as its main thing, or at least that was assumed to be its main thing.

Let me put it another way. Zelda is the surefire thing and it should be complemented by a new IP, one that shows off the benefits of NX. It isn't a bad strategy. If the new IP doesn't catch on, the known quantity will sell the hardware until the next known quantity hits the market three months later. Before you mention the Wii U, it didn't execute such a strategy; its new IP failed and there was nothing lined up to help NSMBU; there wasn't even anything in sight, except for the surefire failure Pikmin 3 (Pikmin 1 and 2 weren't big sellers). But for the Wii we basically knew the year 1 lineup six months before the system launched. It's a world of difference as far as consumer confidence is concerned.

Anyway, back to the NX launch. Let me put it even more specifically: The system needs a three pillar strategy as far as launch lineup goes.

1. The sequel to a big established IP. That would be covered by Zelda.
2. The new IP. Something with a notable marketing push that shows that the new system brings something new to the table.
3. Classic games. That's the Virtual Console. Everything that is on the Wii U should be ready on the NX's launch day.

If the new IP fails, Zelda will be there for the rescue. The next big sequel shouldn't be far away either, so even in a worst case scenario the system's sales should remain relatively stable (unlike the Wii U which fell off a cliff). A well-executed Virtual Console will definitely help.

Putting out sequels to big established IPs at regular intervalls (let's say three months) will buy Nintendo time to hit it big with a new IP. Putting out two sequels at the same time will mean that Nintendo risks to miss one of the three month intervalls. That could be devastating. There's also the consideration that two big sequels at launch will make it hard for third parties to find any kind of success. One big Nintendo game is already enough to sell the hardware, so it isn't a bad idea to leave third parties a little bit of breathing room.

Oh well, if they release the system along with a brand new IP that showcases its capabilities I'm sure Zelda HD will be enough indeed. This changes the whole thing. But if they don't, I really think they need 2 strong games to kick things off. But first we need to see what's the main point of NX... if it's "just" cross-play, I don't think they could make a specific game to showcase it since most (or all) games would already have this main feature. But that's just speculation from my part, we really need more info on this system.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won
