Perhaps, and I hope this is true.  But I also have to bring up that I think it is pathetic that some people (Including a couple of friends of mine) say that they aren't atheists because that would be too depressing.

There is so much more to life than clinging to a belief that it never ends.  To be clear I am not an atheist, but I do not need religion to tell me life has meaning and is worth living.

I am in no way not an athiest because it would be depressing. I'm an agnostic because 3000 years ago we KNEW the Earth was flat. 2000 years ago we KNEW the sun was drawn by a chariot. 1000 years ago we KNEW that if we did not obey our lords, we would be punished in the afterlife. And now we "know" that there is nothing going on in our brains whenever we die.

Just because we don't detect it right now doesn't mean it isn't happening. But that sure as hell isn't reason to put all your eggs in that basket. Agnosticism.

Exactly.  This video perfectly sums up my view:

However I have to add that you shouldn't assume people believed the way ppopular culture assumes they did.  For instance they didn't really believe the world was flat, and I gauruntee a lot of people (Maybe most) back then didn't REALLY think a chariot pulled the sun.  But that is an entirely different topic.
