Updates have kept the game alive through word of mouth. I think now that updates are over, and well, it being 2016 and all, it won't sell as much. At this point it's hard to be sure about anything, but I would guess 5.5m lifetime.

Going  by just Japan, I think that doesn't mean much. I'm pretty sure mk8 free game and heavy bundle had more effect than splatoon constant updates. 

 

That said in Japan at least splatoon is tracking still by a huge amount. MK8 hit under 5k several weeks already and Splatoon hasn't hit under 10k yet, let alone 5k
