And American politics unfortunately has a major effect on the rest of the world. Even if it's a joke and we can't directly influence the vote, the rest of us have to pay attention.

Got the message across didn't it? Not like the British can directly influence the vote.

Yeah it really did send a message.  The message that three hours of parliamentary time had to be wasted on what I and many others would consider the most asinine debate in modern politcal history.

It sends a message to UK politicians that their constituents don't like Trump and that UK politicians better grow a spine in their dealings with Trump should he ever become US preseident.

It also sends a message to your politicians and people that your closest ally in the West thinks one of your presidential candidates is stupid. Even our right-wing politicians are publicly calling him such now.

Might have taken 3 hours but all politicians have wasted time (and money) on other pointless ventures.
