But you saying Halo and Gears are "story" oriented games is about as hilarious as the other guy saying Killzone multiplayer compares to Gears and Halo.

Halo...Gears... "story"... bwhaha.

I won't comment on Halo since I'm not too familiar with it, but Gears is definitely story driven game. Maybe you just can't see past them muscular alpha-males and horrifying monsters crawling under the ground :) Not every story has to affect you in real life, leave emotional scars or impress audience at Festival de Cannes to be good. For example,  I remember being afraid of monsters under my bed when I was a child and Gears of War reminds me of that.

I love a deep story that affects me, last one that touched me was Life is Strange and a book by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, but being able to only appreciate stories like that would make me.. ugh.. a hipster :P

I enjoyed the first Gears and the whole twist that YOU are the invading monster and not the other guys.

But it's not in the same ballpark as some of the other games I mentioned, hell it ain't even the same damn sport. Yes... stealing lines from Pulp Fiction lol.

My beef with gears is the first was pretty ground breaking and set some standards at a time when it seemed we would never see a co-op game ever again, and the first one was great.   But then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 etc etc etc and they just wore it out and drug it through the mud and it became the poster child for "dudebro".

As far as story goes, all that can be said is it ... has "a" story I guess.  It's definately not saucer eyed jaw open full body numb shaking hands hairs standing on end revelations like some JRPGs (Xenogears cough) :D  When all is said and done, it's an arcade shooter first, with a surface story to justify why you should follow these waypoints and shoot stuff.

Halo does actually have a pretty wide canonical backstory and universe lore retconned in, but it's mostly lore and back story.  In the end, like Gears, it's a "nades and splosions and pwning n00bs" game first and the story potental is sidelined in favor of K/Ds and blowing stuff up.  A classic JRPG story would make Halo's story look like a Michael Bay movie.
