"I found an essential component of Marcus Fenix missing all throughout the video - his vicious scar, which has been quite evident in almost all versions of Gears of war, is somehow… missing."

This is very odd. Why is a vital piece of the main characters appearance absent?

In general though, I thought the graphics in the trailer looked great.

It's possible the new version of the Unreal Engine wasn't complete before Gears 2 went into production, so some of the new effects may be missing.

Although I'm sure Epic could probably add them at a later date.

Maybe part or all of Gears 2 is a prequel to Gears 1 and explains how he got the scar.

Anyways, I wasn't disapointed at all with the gameplay trailer, it looked like fun to me, but then again, I've never been one to count pixels or polygons or whatever.

That thought did occur to me.

However, If you listen to the start of the trailer on GT, Cliffy B states that the scene on show takes place directly after the events of the first game.

(Something about trucks with drills etc.)

So it's not a flashback or a prequel.

Prequel wouldn't make any sense anyways. In Gears 2 they say the locusts have the ability to make entire cities crumble. Similar to the holes they made before except even larger to the point where cities will collapse into the ground.

Now if this happens in a "prequel", then why can't they do it anymore in Gears 1? Considering they didn't have any good way to counterattack the Locusts until the end of the game. It just wouldn't make any sense.

In my opinion Gears 3 would be the "prequel" if they had one. Gears 2 I also believe is considered their "Last Stand" against the Locusts.
