Edit: and yes, Ash and Red are two different characters. There's no licensing issue here.

So, would you just have Nintendo and the Pokemon Co. ignore the huge cash-cow that is the anime?

You have to admit that if you polled the average North American, 10 times as many people would recognize the name Ash Ketchum as would recognize Red.
