There's no correlation between releasing a console "early" and damaging the industry or even your own singular market share. Sega Genesis, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS all launched "early" in some ways too and all were hugely successful. It just depends on how you execute. Nintendo could launch in 2018, 2019, 2020 and still bomb if the product is a poor one that doesn't appeal to a wide variety of people. Hell it could still fail if its released in those years and is genuinely a pretty good console. There are a million variables. There's no release date that means Nintendo is going to magically have success. |
Surely success isn't granted anyway, but a half-gen release could create a mess for multiplayer games. NB, I don't consider releasing one year earlier than competitors too early, if design and production aren't rushed, the early launcher can get a good advantage without damaging itself or the market overall, possibly keeping the lead for the whole gen instead, but too many years before the others can mean a console overpowered (with its power wasted as multiplats couldn't use it completely if they must run on the other consoles available too) compared to previous gen and underpowered compared to competitors of its own gen.
