Apple really wasn't the first one with a smartphone, but they gave us the first smartphone with multitouch and a perfectly matched GUI to these multitouch inputs (pinch, zoom, other touchscreen gestures).
These new input method for phones/PDAs changed everything, not only for iOS but also for Android, Windows mobile/phone and many other Smartphone OS.
