Yeah, actually many big name Atari vcs games retailed for $40-80 over thirty years ago. Concerns about costs are certainly justified as many of us have less cash lying around now than in the past, but this insistence on consoles not exceeding the $400 mark is what led to the underwhelming hardware of this gen. The ps4, for instance, is Sony's least expensive console to produce adjusted for inflation, and the Wii U/Xbox1 really only bucked that trend by including expensive controls/peripherals that helped sink them. When you consider that $100 is insufficient to buy even two games, I've always preferred they make their consoles a little pricier as you only pay that entry fee once and get a significantly better piece of hardware. Unfortunately, that's not how we consumers generally think, so they've moved away from producing impressive hardware in favor of lower pricing than your competitor. |
I never bothered as much with HW pricing as with games, and never understood why people think 300-400 HW is expensive while being ok with 60 SW. I understand games cost a lot to make, and find funny when people defend Nintendo when having small budget and big profits (I would feel ripped off), but I rarely buy full price. But as you said, customer want to bitch about everything.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"
