If Nintendo is not as mainstream as Playstation or Xbox then why the 3DS is the best seller system (home or handheld) of this generation? I live in a little town in Mexico and my friends, nephews and myself have both the Wii U and 3DS, I think my neighbourgh has a PS4 but I'm not exactly sure. My point is: Nintendo is still mainstream, the thing is PS and Xbox are mainstream as well and now the three brands are recognizable and in the past just Nintendo was (nobody here knew 3DO or Neo Geo and they barely knew Sega, everything was "a Nintendo") but nowadays because of internet or globalization or whatever other brands are recognizable as well. |
That is true. I didn't included handhelds in my comment since I didn't think they would fit in here. I didn't even consider splitting the market into regions. If we look at just Japan, Nintendo is still very much mainstream. Everyone there knows about the Nintendo as well as owning a 3DS. The Wii U however... they people know about it, but not so much... Althought, it is probably more mainstream than Sony.
As for other regions, like in EU, it is probably that Ninten is not so mainstream since the PS brand is the primary console, but I am not from EU, so I can't comment on that. And as for the US, it is likely PS and Xbox, with Ninten being on the decline, but not niche... Nintendo can't be niche because they're just too recognizable to be niche. It's hard to answer now. They are mainstream, but... just not the Wii U is mainstream.
