I think the point was to keep sales at a decent level for a bit longer. And it worked out to some extent, especially if we take a look at the 2015 line-up of games.
I'm pretty sure 2016 will be able to keep somewhat similar sales thanks to a much better line-up, and, of course, the New 3DS.
