Ps4 might be selling the best this gen but it isn't doing gangbusters. And you seem to be ignoring that a new competitor will affect ps4 sales in a bad way.

The only way I could see Sony seeing the NX as direct competition and releasing a new console early is if 3rd parties (western 3rd parties in particular) come back to Nintendo platforms, start to willingly use the NX as their lead platform and plug the NX version of their games more than the Playstation version.  Now, if Microsoft pushes the issue and releases a new xbox console early, then I can see Sony following suit with a PS5 prematurely because both of them basically live or die by how much 3rd parties support they get while Nintendo would be happy just to get noticed by them.

In that case, you should reevaluate your concept of direct competition.
