The marketing and inflation made the movie become the highest grossing movie in the US, not its quality.

It also had weaker weekdays in its 3rd week than Avatar.

Also, the Chinese Yuan exchange rate is more favourable to TFA than Avatar - and that's on top of the Chinese growth in cinema. As is the GBP and the Australia dollar.

I might be wrong but I believe it is biger than Avatar adjusted for inflation too (not much change for Acatar since its not that old) and Im not gona go into a discussion of why adjusting stuf for inflation is always questionable again cause its besides the point. If it isnt biger than Avatar with inflation itll be very soon.

And seriously marketing ? Cause Avatar had no marketing, like at all right ? And what is that even suposed ot mean, movies that have hughe marketing campaings are automaticaly bad, or good movies should have no marketing at all, a combination of both or what?  And the ppl going to see FA like 3,4 times is becuase of marketing not because its a good movie right ? Critics opinions were also all hype and/or because Disney payed them right ? Disney must also have payed every ppl who says if they liked the movie or not on Rotten Tomatoes I believe.

And China doesnt make up for the market of the entire rest fo the world, and Avatar made 200 M there, the market was already quite big when movies actualy got to release, the problem was almost no movie released there. And damm those Ausies and Brits if only they had gone to see the movie 500 times each the exchange rate in these 2 countrys would have made a difference.

Acept your opinion about the movie diverges from the crushing majority and stop being anoying for Christ sake.
