Ohh so that's why Destiny on the X360 and PS3, a combined hardware total of 160 million dramatically outsold their next generation counterparts which only have an install base of around 55 million.

Let's look at those numbers!

X360/PS3 combined sales: 3.5 million
X1/PS4 sales: 8.5 million

How did that happen!?!?! The X360/PS3 should have outsold the PS4 and X1 "with ease", right?

It's almost as if there are other factors involved in a game's sales other than install base!

Oh sorry! Cross gen game that runs better on current generation systems...

I was referring to non cross gen games Dr House...

I'm sorry, why exactly should that make a difference? An install base is an install base.

But since you're so kinked up in knots over cross gen games. How about this one? Far Cry 3 for PS3 sold 3.4 million copies in 2012 in an install base of about 65-70 million consoles. Far Cry 4 for PS4 sold 3.7 million copies in 2014 in an install base of about 15-20 million consoles. But here we're talking single sku vs. single sku. PS3 was the current gen platform when Far Cry 3 came out. PS4 is the current gen platform when Far Cry 4 came out. Your contention is that examples such as this should not happen. So please, go ahead and explain how such things are possible!

They are jumping over. People want to play the game on a current gen console unless they are too expensive...

As for Far Cry 3... I hate to use that word but...

Undertracked...

Not to mention that there is another factor. The PS3 wasn't well received in America where these games do the bulk of their sales, whereas the PS4 is, but that isn't a problem since both sales are rather close anyways and my original point was how you can expect games for more popular consoles to sell more... when current gen outsells the former, it's great news, but it doesn't happen often...

It could be undertracked, or it could just be the sales of Blood Dragon that wasn't tracked. We don't know. These announcements can be a bit nebulous.

Regardless - it's excuse after excuse. The fact of the matter is, even if we isolate the PS3's/PS4's North American install base, the PS3 had a much much larger install base when Far Cry 3 was released than the install base of the PS4 when Far Cry 4 came out.  If you want to talk secondary consoles (in terms of sales) and compare PS3 Far Cry 3 sales to Xbox One Far Cry 4 sales, the picture is even worse, and the X1 is selling much more closely to the PS4 in NA than the PS3 ever did with the X360.

However, the fact that its even close comparing Far Cry 3 PS3 sales to Far Cry 4 PS4 sales completely contradicts your argument that a platform's install base (if relatively healthy) can have a dramatically negative effect on a game's sales. I mean the Wii U has less than 6 million sales in North America and that platform has multiple games that have sold over a million copies in North America. Install base really is no excuse when you have 12 million North American Xbox Ones sold. That is more than enough consoles to have 2-3 million in sales.

Any way you look at it, if you're any bit consious of the video game landscape, the sales of Rise of the Tomb Raider are bad, and must incredibly disappointing for Square Enix and Microsoft. They definitely expected to have at least double the sales at this point.
