The holy grail for Nintendo with third parties would basically be if the *portable* could run PS4/XB1 ports. For third parties they're put in an awkward position with Nintendo because the portable 3DS has the userbase they would want but it doesn't have the power to run any type of modern game engine so they'd have to make games from scratch for it which is more trouble than its worth. The console has better power obviously, but doesn't have the userbase, so that's a no go. PS4/XB1 ports may seem ambitious ... but mobile tech is improving by leaps and bounds, if they could run PS4/XB1 type graphics at 960x540 resolution (1/4th the pixels of 1080p) .... that would be a game changer for Nintendo. They would get a lot of support IMO. Then once you have third parties already committed to making a NX portable port, they may as well make a 1080P console NX version too. See that's how you hook them.

That would still require a lot of horsepower and even high end portables are only slightly more powerful than PS3. As Nintendo will likely price its portable at $250 that wouldn't be possible. But it could run less demanding PS4 games like JRPG's and turn-based strategy and RTS games on PC. I think RTS games would fit a handheld well.
