It never gets to the point where you truly believe you're on the planet, but in playing certain video games (examples I'll reference are Amnesia and Silent Hill 2) your mind becomes less aware that you are actively in a living room/bedroom/wherever. You become so focused and wrapped up in the world you're playing in that you aren't as aware of your current surroundings. Having to consistently look down to a controller, and, by extension, look over my table, my floor, and my chair, means that I never stop being aware of my surroundings.
I'd argue that without the Gamepad (and without a lot of the clipping issues that are extremely prevalent in X), it would be possible to get lost in the same way, but hey. That'll differ from person to person.
