Nintendo should make games they are comfortable developing. If they want to create a rated-M game, then they will. I mean, they created a rated-T Zelda game and they've released a few Metroid games that were rated-T so they are not afraid to go beyond the rated E for everyone rating. Heck, the Mother games are darker games than people realize. Even some of the "kiddy" games like Mario Galaxy and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze aren't really kiddy at all.

Just developing a rated-M game for the sake of it would not do them any favors. I agree that they can use their second-party developers to create such games. Fire Emblem, Metroid, and, maybe, Golden Sun can be utilized to test the waters. While games like Fatal Frame and Bayonetta are great to have, they don't make much of an impact for core gamers. If they did, then more people would've bought the Wii U for those games by now.
