Markting was definitely one of the issues. Nintendo did a very poor job advertising the Wii U during its launch. Wii U isn't perfect, but it's far from being a disaster.

I honestly believe the Wii U's marketing was fine.

But the name of the console confused consumers and its too expensive because of the tablet control. It it stuck with the Wiimote it would have been more successful.

Wii U is a sales disaster because of price, marketing cant help that.

Technically, they're both aspects of the overall marketing plan.

OT:

I would effectively convert the next Xbox into a 'PC for TV box' (a bit like Steam machine but with lots of actual PC game support). Have a functional Windows Lite on the machine but make it so that PC games can be played (a lot of PC games already support the 360 contoller so it wouldn't take much to add in controller support for the new console). These can then be sold on Live Store at launch so it already supports a massive library of PC games for download. It would effectively have the largest games library of any console at launch.

I would then add in mod support a bit like Steam workshop with the ability to install mod tools for different games (with keyboard and mouse support for those who are serious).

I would also get into bed with Oculus and Facebook more with full VR support.
