Googled Monomotapa and cane across some real interesting stuff.
The area is basically parts of southern Africa that were called as such between 1430-1760. A king ruled and the area was fought over by the Portuguese who were interested in it due to the gold mines it had. The gold mines were also part of a Bible belief that King Solomon's city of gold could have been there.
The coasts were part of the trading routes to India, meaning there would have been pirates about to. I wonder how much of this will tie in to what we know already.
