Unlike much of the industry today, Nintendo usually doesn't talk about games that have more than a year of development left. In fact, the only reason we heard about a lot of this year's releases in 2013 was because Nintendo expected those games to be finished sooner than they were, but they weren't because of Nintendo's workload of developing for 3DS and Wii U and because Nintendo's own developers were still getting adjusted to HD development.

If they started development on a Metroid game this year, I wouldn't expect to hear about it until 2017 and it will most likely get a 2018 release.

All that make sense, but next year will be 30th anniversary of Metroid, I think Nintendo will want to mark that anniversary with announcement of new Metroid Prime game, maybe just a little short trailer or in worst case just art work.
