See, at least Cousins can rightfully claim that his idiocy was a panic move, and it didn't cost him the game.

Slater did what Belichick said to do, he according to post-game question, he asked BB 3 times.

Then I have absolutely no idea what Belichick was thinking. I guess the conspiracy theory thing would be to suggest that he'd rather play the Jets than the Steelers in a potential divisional matchup and has enough confidence in his team to beat Miami next week, but that seems incredibly un-Belichick-like. Wind wasn't a factor. Maybe he thought that little of the Jets' offense?

Only thing I can think of is playoff seeding.  Otherwise it'll remain a mystery, because we know BB's already on to Miami.

Tbh, looking back on it, I'm skeptical that Belichick and the coaching staff did request this. ESPN's by no means the most trustworthy source in the world, but I have trouble believing that they would just make that coin toss transcript up, and it definitely seems to suggest Slater thought he was confused about what he was selecting. My guess would be that the coaching staff covered a misque up; kicking the ball in overtime on a day like that doesn't seem like an intentional choice anyone would make.
