True, but for me personally it's another Portal/Portal 2 situation. The first game brought those pieces to the puzzle, but the second game made them fit oh so perfectly - and even brought a few more pieces IMO

PS craze with Modern Warfare and we know how that went down going on ten years later..

Hmmm what would you call a classic from the 7th gen, just for reference?

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, MGS4 (despite the RE4 TPS influence), Portal 1 and 2 and that's about it off the top of my head.  I'd argue DE:HR is a classic though.

Story wise, the apocalyptic/post apocalyptic scenario now is more tiring than the save the world scenario.  You can at least do  more with the narrative in the latter and the world is so much more pleasing and interesting since it's alive and kicking.  Lore and data finding become too dominant as a story telling device otherwise.

Don't you think Demon's/Dark Souls were classics? Souls turned to be the definition of a genre as of now already, people will go comparing other games to it and calling "it's like Dark Souls" while doing it. Souls is almost a synonym to hard games nowdays.

To me it's pretty close to a point of Shadow of the Colossus turned becoming a classic (quality aside as all those games are simply awesome and also very recognized for it and for being open in the way to tell you the story as well), as "it's like Shadow of the Colossus" is what comes to be the definition of games that have huge colossal beings.

I was thinking about putting them down, but they're kind of a mixed bag. Imo  it's not about a game being enjoyable because its a challenge, its about it being just enjoyable.  I suppose Dark Souls could be considered a classic, but it has such a discernable quality to it that can make it difficult to want to  pick up and play.  I should know, I went through several phases with that game being stuck on bosses.  It was only after I beat the game that I started to enjoy it.  And enjoy it immensely I did..afterwards.  But definitely not before.
